Starters

We recently heard that there are over 9000 different starter's on the market today, we at Auto Start have seen most of them.  They range from the tiny four wheeler starters to huge excavation equipment with tires bigger than a building.  Hopefully your needs are somewhere in between these.

Starters are basically motors powered by a battery that start your primary motor, they require a variety of battery application, from 6 volt to 36 volt battery systems.  Typically the basic starter is powered by a 12 volt system.

We at Auto Start test your starter only after we determine your battery has enough cranking amps to power your starter and start your vehicle.

The worse culprit for a starter is actually LOW voltage.  This is a discharged battery or a bad battery that is only marginal at best.  Low voltage batteries can cause your starter to explode while trying to start your vehicle.  This symptom can also cause a wiring harness to fry or burn quickly, therefore a costly repair of the electrical harness is in need.

At the first hint of a dragging or slow turning starter a battery check should be make to avoid other costly repairs, we can happily take care of these test for you here at Auto Start.  If the starter is already off we will check it with hot batteries to perform load test and current draw and determine if the starter is indeed not working properly.

We provide high torque starters for the hot rod group and racing enthusiast.  In most cases we like to keep original equipment on these vehicles and we find we can boost torque and power by rebuilding your starter with heavy duty field coils and a "beefy" armature.  The improvement is truly amazing on your high compression engines.

Marine applications, PLEASE NOTE, not all starters are the same and when it come to marine applications caution is highly recommended.  Marine application starter must meet Coast Guard approval, this means a starter used on or near water must have spark arrestor installed in the starter for obvious safety reasons.  If you use a standard automotive starter the chances of a spark near gas fumes in the engine compartment is always a risky move.  A pleasant day on the lake could end up a disaster, so why take a chance when the extra cost is so low.
